A Status of Residence (在留資格, zairyuu shikaku) is your qualification for staying in the country. Your Status of Residence and Period of Stay will be listed on your Residence Card. There are 28 different kinds of statuses and the period of stay will vary accordingly.

In principle, your activities are limited by those specified by your status of residence. For example, if you enter Japan as a temporary visitor or college student, your status of residence does not allow you to work for pay. Unless you obtain
Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted, working and receiving a salary is clearly against the law and may lead to criminal prosecution and possibly deportation. It is also illegal to stay in Japan longer than your indicated period of stay without obtaining permission (sometimes referred to “overstaying a visa”).

Applications for permission to engage in other activities, applications to change your status of residence, or applications to extend your period of stay must be submitted to the Morioka Immigration Office.
