There were a great many changes to Japan’s immigration system in 2012 to streamline the process. The biggest change was getting rid of the old “Foreigner registration card” system, replacing it with Residence cards, and placing foreign residents on the Resident Registry along with Japanese residents. Foreign residents entering the system following July 9, 2012 were automatically placed in the new system, and residents on the old system were updated.
