Tertiary education is also offered by a variety of institutions including junior colleges and technical colleges (educational institutions covered by laws other than the School Education Law).

Application Criteria

Universities require applicants to pass an entrance exam, although some schools admit on the basis of a recommendation.

  1. The applicant must be at least 18 on April 2 of the year in which they intend to enter university
  2. The applicant must fulfil one of the following conditions:
    • have completed or expect to complete their education at a Japanese senior high school (does not apply to international schools)
    • have passed the University Entrance Qualification Certificate Examination (every August, a uniform exam is held across Japan, which examines that the candidate’s academic level is equivalent to having finished a high school education. Anyone who has completed compulsory education may take this exam)
    • have completed 12 years of school education overseas

*The application procedure normally starts in January, with entrance examinations being held in February and March. For further details, contact the university.

*The procedure for study abroad students is different - this is for regular matriculation at a tertiary school.
