Once the baby is born

Birth notification (出生届, shusshou todoke)

Submit this notification within 14 days of birth. Your baby will also be entered into the Resident Register.
This applies to foreign residents as well. You can register at the section of your local municipal office handling family registries.

What you need

  • Birth Registration Form (出生届, shusshou todoke, available at the municipal office)
  • Birth certificate (issued by the hospital)
  • Your name seal (hanko)

Citizenship for the child

For foreign citizenship, you should comply with your home country’s legal requirements, so please check these in advance. While you are in Japan you can complete these procedures at your country’s embassy or consulate.

Immigration requirements

If the child is not a Japanese national (does not have a Japanese parent), then you must also apply to acquire a status of residence (visa) within 30 days of birth.

Notification of low birth weight (低出生体重児の届出, tei shusshou taijuuji no todokede)

If your baby was born with a weight of less than 2,500 grams, you must notify your local municipal office. You can do this by phone (However, there may be only Japanese speakers available).
