Summary of Project Costs for Permanent Measures (1972 to 2015)

These are the costs for the mining pollution cleanup project at the former Matsuo Mine. Total costs over the course of this project equal around 40.7 billion yen, which can be broken down to:

  • Measures taken at the source of pollution: around 8.6 billion yen
  • Construction of the new neutralization treatment facility and the waste dam: around 9.3 billion yen
  • Conservation channels created at Aka River: around 1.2 billion yen
  • Neutralization of wastewater: around 21.6 billion yen.

Summary of Changing Unit Costs of Water Treatment (1982 to 2015)

The cost of treating 1m3 of wastewater has changed over the years. The cost has tended to decrease over the years compared to when the work first commenced in 1982. The reasons for this are:

  1. The improvement in quality of the raw water due to treatment carried out at the source of the pollution.
  2. Improvement in efficiency thanks to the installation of energy efficient equipment.

Recent years have seen an increase in the unit cost because of the steep rise in personnel and material costs caused by reconstruction work for the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
