Tours of the Treatment Facility

Facts and figures

At the treatment facility, 18 cubic meters of acidic wastewater are neutralized per minute, the highest volume per minute of all such treatment facilities in Japan. The acidic wastewater contains dissolved bivalent Fe2+, which the facility oxidizes into trivalent Fe3+ using iron oxide bacteria. This way it is possible to treat the wastewater using calcium carbonate, a cheap neutralizing agent.

• Please make reservations within 1 month to 1 week before your requested date of visit.
• When making reservations, please tell us your name, requested date of visit, number of people, contact information, and purpose of visit.

About the facility tours

• Possible visiting hours: 9時30分-16時30分
• Possible days for tours: Weekdays （there are  times when tours are not possible due to treatment operations）
• We cannot give tours on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, New Year’s holiday, and Golden Week （reservations are also closed at these times）
• Age restrictions: 4^th grade  elementary students and older
• Supervision necessary: Elementary, JHS and HS students must have adult supervision during tours
• Group size: 10-30 people （prior consultation is necessary for groups less than 10 or more than 30）
• Caution #1: You must wear a helmet （you don’t need to bring one yourself）
• Caution #2: Do not drop anything into the tanks
• Tour length: 25mins-1.5hrs （a full tour entails: opening talk 10mins; video 15mins; viewing of site 30-60mins）
• Facilities open to visitors: neutralization treatment facility, permanent drainage channel tunnel, waste dam
• Photographs: You may take pictures of all parts of the site open to visitors
