Child allowance

児童手当, jidou teate

This is a national system that supplies a stipend to guardians of children up to the end of middle school, or up to the first March 31st after they have turned 15, whichever comes first. Based upon the guardian’s income.

Child dependent allowance (for single parents)

児童扶養手当, jidou fuyou teate

This is a national system that supplies a stipend to single-parent households with children. You may receive the allowance until the first March 31st after your child turns 18 (or 20 in certain cases). Based upon the guardian’s income.

You may also receive this allowance if the father has a disability.

Special child dependent allowance (for children with special needs that have been institutionalized)

特別児童扶養手当, tokubetsu jidou fuyou teate

This is a national system that supplies a stipend to families with children with physical or mental disabilities, up to the age of 20. Based upon the guardian’s income, and limited to those with children in specialized institutions.

Welfare allowance for children with disabilities (for children with disabilities that require daily care)

障害児福祉手当, shougaiji fukushi teate

This is a national system that supplies a stipend to those living in a household with a child with disabilities that needs daily care, up to the age of 20. Only for those who are Class 1 in the Identification Booklet for the Physically Disabled, or Part A of the Identification Booklet for the Intellectually Disabled. Based on the guardian’s income.

Medical subsidy systems for people with severe mental and physical disabilities

重度心身障害者医療費助成制度, juudo shinshin shougaisha iryouhi josei seido

These systems can help cover the personal costs involved with treatments outlined in the Health Insurance Law. Inquire with your local municipal government, as each has different systems and regulations.
