Emily is originally from Canberra, Australia. She started taking Japanese in elementary school as a part of her curriculum. She participated in a homestay program as a student, where she visited Fukui Prefecture. She is interested in Japanese culture, history, and traditions.

Since July 2016, she has been working as a Coordinator for International Relations in the Kamaishi City Hall through a Japanese government initiative called the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. Her duties include interpreting for visitors from abroad, English language classes for residents, and sending out news from Kamaishi to the world.

telling the world about Kamaishi

While living in Australia, Emily had a big interest in Japan. Her dreams came true when she was employed by Kamaishi. “Kamaishi has mountains and the ocean - it’s really abundant in nature. I think it’s an amazing place filled with many kind and positive people,” she said.

In preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Emily works on a variety of fields related to welcoming foreigners, such as holding English language classes in the city and running the English versions of Kamaishi’s Facebook and Instagram page.

“I think if more people from abroad knew about Kamaishi, they would definitely come. I want to help bring in more people to visit Kamaishi,” said Emily, who is putting much effort into sending out information about Kamaishi.

To become an international city

“Coming to Kamaishi, a place bursting with nature, is a very Japanese experience for foreigners, as well as a chance to talk to the locals. Even if you don’t speak English, as long as you smile, you’ll be able to communicate with each other. I think it’s really great that by talking with the people of Kamaishi, we are able to learn about each other’s cultures and have more international interactions. The World Cup is a chance to make the city into an international city. Even after the World Cup ends, I think there will be a lot of people coming to Kamaishi to visit, so I don’t want to pass up this opportunity. I want to tell the world about Kamaishi,” she said enthusiastically.
