Snow Shoveling Duty (雪当番, yuki toban)

If you live in an apartment complex or condominium complex, you may be entered into the shoveling duty roster. Basically, the yuki toban is the person responsible for shoveling the snow in the parking lot and paths around the building. Once a week or so, the duty shifts to the next apartment dweller on the list. However, when you have heavy snowfall, usually everyone in the building pitches in.

Snow Shoveling Etiquette and Other Tips

  • Do not shovel snow into the street.
  • Do not shovel snow into someone else’s property.
  • Don’t get in the way of snow plows.
  • Don’t park your car in the street; park it in its designated parking spot.
  • Try to help out the yuki toban when it snows heavily.
