 These pages introduce the northern coastal towns and cities of Iwate prefecture : Kuji,Fudai.Taneichi,Noda,Yamagata and Ohno.

IWATE Prefecture

Kuji has been known as an amber site since olden times. In fact amber from Kuji was used in the production of Nara's Shosoin.
Much of the Kuji region remains as it was in the past. Agriculture still plays a large part in the lives of many people.Much of their skill,wisdom and culture still remain to this day.


KUJI(久慈)
In summertime, Kuji city is periodically shrouded in the yamase.This is a north-easterly wind which envelops the surrounding countryside in an eerie mist.
Kuji is also the hometown of Mifune Judan. Mifune was responsible for spreading the word of judo and for establishing Kuji's sister city relationship with Lithuania.

TANEICHI(種市)
  Encircled by the green of the forests and the blue of the sea, Taneichi is the only place in Japan where divers can train on nanbu-moguri, a traditional form of diving.
  Taneichi is also Iwate prefecture's biggest supplier of sea urchin and shiitake mushrooms.

NODA(野田)
  The reddish-brown sandy beach of Tofugaura Beach and the traditional Nanbu-Magariya dwellings are the main attractuin of Noda village. Much still remains here of the old way of life,unchanged by the time.

YAMAGATA(山形)
  Yamagata has the most white birch trees in all of Japan,a fact that it is proud of. Yamagata village is full of natural beauty. Including one of Iwate's designated cultural sites,Uchimagi Cave.

OHNO(大野)
  Situated 200m above sea level. The rolling hills of Ohno are home to a thriving dairy farming industry.

FUDAI(普代)
  Situated at 40°N Latitude is Fudai village. Fudai is home to one of Japan's fifty best lighthouses, known as Kurosaki Toudai. The isaribi (lights used to attract fish)are visible from this point.
