Foreign nationals, in particular, may find themselves at a disadvantage due to a lack of understanding of the Japanese employment system and customs, as well as misunderstandings arising from the language barrier.

Employment is based on a contract between employer and employee. Employers are obligated to pay the agreed wages, not use discrimination or force, and not to dismiss employees without valid reason.

If you are unfortunate enough to have problems with your employers, you may approach the Labour Standards Inspection Office or Regional Promotion Bureau ( >> Department of Regional Promotion ) for advice.
