Depending on your status of residence ( >> Status of Residence and Duration of Stay ), you may or may not be allowed to work ( >> Status of Residence and Duration of Stay ). If your status of residence does not permit you to work, you must fill out and have granted the application for permission to engage in activity other than that permitted by the status of residence ( >> Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence ) previously granted (a form much less imposing than its name implies). If you fail to do so, you will be considered to be engaging in illegal labour, and both you and your employer will be subject legal consequences.

If you hold one of the following statuses of residence there is no restriction on your employment.
permanent resident, spouse or child of Japanese national, spouse or child of permanent resident, long-term resident, special permanent resident
