Status of Residence and Duration of Stay Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence |
Status of Residence and Duration of StayAs mentioned on page 7, the Permission for Landing stamp in your passport will give details of your status of residence and duration of stay. There are 27 different kinds of status (>>Status of Residence), and the duration of stay varies accordingly. In principle, the activities foreign nationals are permitted to engage in are confined to those specified by their status of residence. (This does not apply to permanent residents, dependents of Japanese nationals or permanent residents, or long-term residents.) For example, if you enter Japan as a temporary visitor or a college student, your status of residence does not permit you to engage in employment. Unless you obtain Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted (>>Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence), taking up employment and receiving a salary is clearly against the law and may lead to criminal prosecution and possibly deportation. It is also illegal to stay in Japan longer than your duration of stay without obtaining permission to extend your duration of stay. Applications for permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by your status of residence, or permission to change your status of residence (>>Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence), must be submitted at your local immigration office. Similarly, if you wish to remain in Japan after the expiration of your duration of stay, you must apply for permission to extend your duration of stay (>>Extension of Duration of Stay) at your local immigration office before your valid duration of stay expires.
