Extension of Duration of Stay
If you wish to remain in Japan after your duration of stay expires you must apply for permission to extend your duration of stay before the expiry date shown in your passport. You can apply at your local immigration office, from 2 months prior to the expiry date. If your application is approved you will receive an extension permit as a stamp or sticker in your passport.
If you remain in Japan after your duration of stay expires without permission to do so, you will be liable to criminal prosecution and possible deportation.
An application for permission will not necessarily be approved. In particular, it is difficult to receive permission to extend your duration of stay when you are here as a temporary visitor.
