Changing Status of Residence

When changing from your original stated purpose for coming to Japan, i.e. if a student graduates and wishes to seek employment in Japan, it is necessary to apply for permission to change your status of residence accordingly. If you do not do so, or do not seek permission to engage in activities other than those specified in your status of residence (>>Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence), you will be breaking the law and will be liable to criminal prosecution and possible deportation. Making an application to change your status of residence may not necessarily be approved, and in some cases you may be forced to leave the country.

Dependents of Japanese nationals who hold the appropriate status of residence, but who lose their spouse through death or divorce are usually unable to remain in Japan without changing their status of residence. Generally, foreign manual labourers are not legally recognised, so unless you hold a recognised occupation it is difficult to change your status of residence. However, it is now possible to change your status of residence to Long-term Resident if you are deemed to have special circumstances, such as possessing sufficient assets or skills to independently support yourself, or having a child of Japanese nationality (>> The Nationality of Children) that you must support in Japan.

There are an infinite number of possible situations, so for further information please contact the Sendai Regional Immigration Bureau, or the Morioka Branch Office ( >> Immigration Offices), your local immigration lawyer or the Association of Administrative Solicitors (gyosei shoshi, >> Immigration Offices) in Iwate. )
