Activities Other Than Those Permitted by the Status of Residence
An exchange student taking a part-time job for which they receive remuneration
while studying is an example of someone engaging in activities other than those
permitted by their status of residence. If you wish to engage in activities that
are not specified in your current status of residence, you must apply for permission
to do so in advance at your local immigration office. Students may apply through
their academic institution rather than applying directly to immigration authorities.
Please note that it is not necessary to gain permission to perform non-paid activities
such as volunteering, or those where an honorarium is paid, such as taking part
in a conference. However, if an exchange student gains employment upon completion
of their studies, they must apply for permission to change their status of residence,
not simply permission to engage in activities other than those specified in their
status of residence. Applications for permission to engage in activities other
than those specified will be refused if it is deemed that the additional activities
will be to the detriment of the original activity prescribed by the status of
residence; for example, a student working more than 28 hours a week, would be
deemed unable to concentrate on their studies, and thus would be denied permission.
