Possession of a Passport

A passport is an official form of identification, the possession of which is a prerequisite for entering Japan. When you arrive in Japan it will be examined carefully, and your visa, status of residence, etc. will be stamped in your passport. Under Japanese law all foreign nationals are required to carry their passport at all times and must present it to police officers when requested. (If you have an Alien Registration Card (>>Alien Registration Card) then this may be presented instead of a passport). Therefore it is important to take great care of your passport and keep it safe. If you lose it you must report the loss to the police and apply for a replacement from your country's embassy (or consulate) in Japan.
