Alien Registration Procedure

Foreign nationals must apply to their local municipality for alien registration within 90 days of arriving in Japan ( >> Disembarkation ) or within 60 days in the case of births.

To apply you must go in person to your local municipal office (children under 16 may be registered by a representative they live with). Alien registration is usually carried out by the residents’ department (the exact name of which may vary from office to office), the same department that deals with family and residents' registration. Registration is free of charge.
