Many rental contracts for apartments expressly forbid the keeping of pets, so you will need to check. It is illegal to let a pet roam freely, and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, including when out walking. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs’ droppings (most people carry plastic bags). Due to the close proximity of housing in Japan, there may be a number of problems arising from pet keeping, such as noisy dogs disturbing neighbours. It is important to bear all this in mind when considering taking on a pet.
Dogs over 91 days old must be registered and inoculated. This can be done at municipal offices and designated veterinary surgeries.
Owners must take responsibility for the disposal of pet waste. |
