Inheritance of Property

When a close relative dies there is always the problem of property inheritance. In the case of a Japanese person, inheritance is limited to the deceased’s spouse and children. If there are no children the inheritors are extended to include the deceased’s parents; if parents are already deceased then surviving siblings are recognised as inheritors.

Although the proportion of the assets that each inheritor may receive is determined by law, the deceased may leave a will setting out a different distribution.

In the case of a foreign national, inheritance of assets is determined according to the deceased’s home country’s inheritance laws.
