International Marriage

Marriage between a Japanese and foreign national must be registered at the local municipal office, or that of the Japanese national’s family register. Conditions of marriage in their respective countries must be met. Japanese nationals must have reached the legal age for marriage (16 for women, 18 for men) or have their guardians’ consent, and must not be already married (polygamy is forbidden). For women, at least 6 months have past since any previous divorce. The marrying couple may not be of the same extended family (except if they are cousins). Foreign nationals must prove that they fulfill all the conditions for marriage in his /her home country. Embassies and consulates in Japan issue a Satisfaction of Marriage Condition Certificate. However, it is up to the local municipal office whether or not to accept this certificate, so please check in advance.
