Driving Licence

You will need a driving licence if you drive in Japan. If you are caught driving without one you will be heavily penalised. If you hold an overseas driving licence you have the following options when wishing to drive in Japan:

(1) Nationals of Germany, France and Switzerland only may drive using their own country's licence (with a certified translation) for 1 year from the date of entering Japan.

(2) If you are a national of one of the signatory countries to the Geneva Convention, you may drive on an international driving licence for 1 year from the date of entering Japan. (However, in the event that your international licence expires and you wish to renew the licence, you must have spent at least 3 months in the country of issue following the renewal in order to be able to use it in Japan).

(3) You may transfer your licence into a Japanese licence.
