Road Accidents

If you cause an accident you must do the following
○ Stop your vehicle on the shoulder or spare land.
○ If there are any injured help them as necessary.
○ Call an ambulance (119) and the police (110).
*If you cause an accident but do not stop, you may be charged with “hit and run”. If you do not inform the police you may be charged with “failure to report an accident”.
○ Obey instructions from the police once they arrive at the scene.

In the event of a fatal accident you may be severely punished for professional negligence resulting in injury or death; your licence may be suspended or revoked; and you may be liable to fines and imprisonment depending on the level of your responsibility. As well as compensation for loss of earnings you may also be asked to pay the victim compensation for psychological damage.

The settling of compensation claims after an accident is very complicated and difficult. Often due to lack of legal competence even victims are left with financial losses. If the unlikely event that the perpetrator fails to pay such compensation you should contact either the Iwate Prefecture Citizens' Life Centre ( >> Consumer Affairs ), or your local Regional Promotion Bureau ( >> Department of Regional Promotion ) for advice.
