Transportation in Iwate

Public transportation is provided by buses and trains, though neither network is as frequent as those in larger metropolitan areas. Further, public transportation usage continues to slide downward as car ownership increases.

[Bus]

Bus services are split between Iwateken Kotsu in the area south of Morioka, and Iwate Kenpoku to the north of Morioka. Some other localised services are offered by JR bus lines.

[Taxi]

In town you can usually find taxis waiting outside the station, in front of hotels and in the downtown area. Other than these places you may have to make a telephone call to the taxi company.

[Air Travel]

Iwate’s sole airport, Iwate Hanamaki Airport, is located in Hanamaki and can be reached by regular buses from Morioka, Hanamaki and Kitakami. The bus ride from Morioka takes about 1 hour.
