Tsunami
Whenever there is an earthquake coastal areas normally have to be alert for tsunami (which are like tidal waves). Iwate's jagged coastline of inlets, coves, and bays juts out into the Pacific Ocean, from which a number of large tsunami have wrought severe damage on coastal areas.
○If you are on low-lying land near the coast when you feel an earthquake, move quickly to higher ground as a minute's delay could cost you your life. In the event of a tsunami do not try to escape by automobile.
○A tsunami may produce many waves, so under no circumstances should you go back to the coast until all emergency warnings have been lifted.
○Be prepared. It is a good idea to decide your escape route in advance.
○Keep yourself informed by listening to the radio and watching the television.
