Registration of Births

Under Japanese law (Family Register Law), births must be registered within 14 days. This applies to foreign nationals residing in Japan as well. You can register at the section of your local municipal office handling family registries (Citizens Affairs Division).

[Documentation]
(1) Birth Registration Form (Shussei todoke; available at the municipal government counter where you register)
(2) Birth Certificate (issued by the hospital)
(3) Name seal

For foreign nationals, you should comply with your home country’s legal requirements, so please check these in advance. While you are in Japan you can complete these procedures at your country’s embassy or consulate ( >> Embassies and Consulates ).
