Alien Registration
Children of foreign nationals born in Japan ( >> The Nationality of Children ) need to be issued with a status of residence ( >> Status of Residence and Duration of Stay ) and an Alien Registration Card ( >> Alien Registration System ). These procedures should be completed within 60 days of the birth at the local municipal office (at the alien registration desk).

If either parent is a special permanent resident, the child is entitled to this same status. An application for permanent residence must be made when applying for alien registration (within 60 days of birth).
