Prevention of Frozen Pipes

During Iwate’s long winter there are many days when the temperature drops below zero, and water pipes may freeze overnight. To prevent this you will need to empty all the water pipes, by turning on all the taps and then turning off the main water valve. The main water valve may either be inside or outside your apartment. It is a good idea to check its location well in advance of winter. If you are not sure about what to do ask your landlord to show you.

There are electrical pipe-warmers on the market which you attach to water pipes to prevent freezing, and some apartments may already have them fitted. However, in severely cold conditions even such appliances may not suffice, and it may still be necessary to empty the water pipes.

In the event that your pipes do freeze there is a risk that they will burst if left unattended. To defrost the pipes, wrap them in towels and slowly pour on hot water. Alternatively you may call the waterworks office and have them arrange it for you (service charge applies).
