Prevention of Gas Leaks and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Disconnecting Services

There are two forms of gas available, city gas and propane gas. City gas is piped to only those areas connected to the city gas network; in all other areas propane gas is the rule. Propane is either stored in individual tanks next to your house, or in a central tank which provides a whole block with propane.

Because their chemical composition and heating qualities are different, you cannot use the same appliances for city gas and propane gas. When buying appliances it is important to check that they are the appropriate kind. If by some chance an appliance you own is unsuitable it is possible to ask the retailer to adapt it for gas use, but it is safer to buy new appliances.

The supply and maintenance of city and propane gas is carried out by specialist gas companies (the city gas company in the case of city gas; and the propane distribution agency for propane) that have been issued a national or prefectural licence.

Getting Connected

When you wish to start using gas you will need to contact the city gas company or propane distribution agency in advance (at least one day), and they will arrange a trip to your house to connect the service for you.
