Visiting Iwate Iwate is located in the northeast of Japan. It takes only about 2.5 hours by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo. There are also regular flights (as of December 2002) to New Chitose (Sapporo, Hokkaido), Nagoya, Itami (Osaka), and Fukuoka from Hanamaki Airport, the Iwate’s only airport. Using the Tohoku Expressway it is possible to reach Iwate in about 6 hours by car from Tokyo.
