The land area of Iwate is 15,278km², which is second only to Hokkaido. The greater part of the land is taken up by mountains and basins, with the Ou Mountain Range running down the Akita Prefecture side, the Kitakami Highlands on the east, and the Kitakami River flowing down the middle.
