Regions
Iwate has a population of approximately 1.42 million. Morioka, the seat of the
Prefectural Government, has a population of 290,000; with the rest of the population
spread out between 13 cities, 16 towns and 6 villages.
The regions of Iwate are usually referred to as “northern’” and “southern”, or sometimes “inland” and “coastal”. The Prefectural Government has 12 Regional Promotion Offices, so sometimes the regions are denoted on the basis of these.
