About Ingress

Ingress. A mobile game that’s taking the world by storm with a simple premise: the world is not what it seems. Players can download Ingress onto their iOS or Android phones to search for “portals” – real life locations that you can track, map, and share with other players across the world. Learn more about Ingress here: https://www.ingress.com/

Ingress is a free app by Google that uses your cell phone’s GPS tracker to record your position as you visit portals around the world. As you visit these portals in real life, you “capture” them for your team, gradually widening your territory. Portals are usually found in popular tourist areas, and you must visit these places in real life to capture the portal. The Iwate Government is registering sightseeing spots as portals around the prefecture to attract Ingress players, which we hope will lead to an increase in local tourism.

The Iwate Government Ingress Research Group was created by government workers on September 25, 2014 to study the potential of Ingress as a new publicity tool to increase tourism, invigorate the regional economy, and spread information. It then evolved into the Iwate Government Gameonomics Research Group to broaden their scope to other games and gamification methods.
