Renewal procedures - Extending your period of stay

ID番号 N32476 更新日 平成29年4月25日

If you wish to remain in Japan longer than your indicated duration of stay, you must apply for permission before the expiry date shown on your residence card. Some people call this renewing your visa, but the official name is “extension of period of stay (在留期間の更新, zairyuu shikaku no koushin.”

You can apply at the Morioka Immigration Office starting 2 months before the expiry date. If your application is approved you will need to return to create a new residence card. The new period of stay will not be indicated in your passport, so you must always bring your residence card with you when leaving and entering Japan.

If you remain in Japan after your duration of stay expires without permission to do so, you will be liable to criminal prosecution and possible deportation. This is sometimes called “overstaying your visa.”

An application for permission will not necessarily be approved.
